The Sit Down
Synopsis
The Sit Down is an against all odds story,
the tale of one man fighting figuratively and
literally to regain a life that’s worth
living. To do that, DANNY NAHMAN must renounce
an existence built around drugs and alcohol;
he must rebuild his self-respect; he must work
hard toward an honest goal; he must repair
broken family ties; and he must win back the
heart of his true love, DEBORAH.
DEBORAH is a hauntingly beautiful medical
student who has held DANNY’s heart since
he was a slight teenage boy bumming around
Brooklyn. DANNY and DEBORAH stand strong,
and side-by-side managed the rough transition
into adulthood with an ongoing, strong love
for one another.
The Sit Down begins
in a New York boxing ring with a heated fight
between DANNY and his opponent JAMES FIELDS. During
the fight, anti-Semitic slurs are being hurled
in DANNY’s direction as the audience
attempts to take him down with their hate. However,
the hate emanating from the crowd fuels DANNY
and he ever-so-easily knocks out his opponent,
which in turn places him as number two ranked
fighter in the prestigious World Boxing Association,
on a meteoric rise toward a title shot.
One night out clubbing with his friends,
a conflict occurs between DANNY and TOMMY,
a notorious neighborhood mobster, a conflict
that would haunt him forever, leaving him with
a crushed knee and a nonexistent future.
DANNY has lost touch
with everything that once defined his life. His
newly crippled body has disabled him from ever
boxing again, leaving him with a hole in his
heart that prompts him to push everything that
he loves away…his friends, his father,
and even DEBORAH. Now DANNY lives in a drunken
cocaine haze, desperate to forget what could
have been and what he has become – an
overweight, has-been boxer with no one to turn
to. Yet, deep inside, DANNY craves respect,
family, camaraderie, and love.
Through an interesting set of circumstances,
DANNY runs into a childhood friend, PUMPKIN,
who needs help running his bar and transforming
it into a respectable establishment. In spite
of DANNY’s sorry state of existence,
PUMPKIN believes that DANNY’s involvement
in rebuilding the club will not only save the
club, but save his best-friend. Distraught
with his shattered life, DANNY decides to clean
up and help PUMPKIN achieve this dream, a dream
DANNY embraces as his own. It’s also
his opportunity to stand up to the mob boss,
TOMMY, who snatched away his promising boxing
career years ago and who is now trying to get
a weekly payoff from PUMPKIN.
It takes hard work, determination, perseverance,
and a sheer force of will, but DANNY battles
his inner demons, putting himself on a workout
regimen, returning to his training grounds,
losing weight, staying away from drugs and
alcohol, and basically reinventing himself.
Everything is coming together for DANNY but
most importantly he wins back the heart of
his true love DEBORAH. DANNY is the co-owner
of Brooklyn’s hottest trendy club, and
he’s in good physical shape.
However, TOMMY returns to DANNY’s life
and threatens once again to take it all away
from him, this time in the form of the club.
DANNY refuses to let all he’s accomplished
slip away; To the dismay of his father, his
girlfriend, and other friends, in a SIT DOWN
with the mob boss, DANNY agrees to get back
into the ring and put everything on the line:
his club, his self-respect, his girl, his family
in order to once and for all live a life free
from the men who once destroyed him.
True to form, DANNY doesn’t back down
and keeps his word. He works harder than he
has in years, despite his bad knee, and makes
it to the fight of his life – the fight
for his life.
